Act Today: Utah Legislature Poised to Gut Animal Torture Law

Today's special session of the Utah legislature features a bill that didn't pass this spring "because of time constraints" … but now may pass with its teeth removed.

Read this short Deseret News article about the animal torture legislation... Then look-up your legislators here... Then call the main Senate (538-1035) and House (538-1029) switchboards and leave a message asking that they pass the law with the first-offense felony provision in-tact.

Just did it myself. Dead simple. They'll ask for your name and phone number in addition to the message.

UPDATE: Utah Senate sent bill to committee... which means it won't be voted on until 2008. I don't know enough about the proceedings to label this move "clever" or "cowardly". The cowardly scenario is that people opposed to the bill didn't want to be seen voting against it, so delayed the vote until there was a lot more confusion. The clever scenario is that it was delayed to secure more time to get the votes needed. It's the right thing to do… so be sure to continue to hound (pun intended) your representatives on this one.
