Snow on Timp

It happened.

Snow returned to the summit of Mt Timpanogos yesterday morning... before all the snow had melted on its South face.

Glorious.

I've lived in the valley 12 short years, which is nothing (I realize) in the great scheme of weather patterns, but I've not seen snow on Timp for an entire year. And the human mind is wired to rejoice in pattern (and breaks in pattern).

So I'm rejoicing.

My family has lived near Timp for nearly 30 years and this is the first year we can remember that all the visible snow didn't melt before the new snow came. We've been watching and waiting all those years.

I stood on the summit of Timp at dawn on Sept. 3 and was very refreshed to see the amount of snow on the east side of Timp. Also, it is impressive to see the snow on the west face after this hot summer. We had three times the normal snowfall last winter, and we need two more such winters to get out of the drought finally.

In mid-July I climbed the Pfeifferhorn and was impressed that I ran into solid snowfields 2/3 of the way up to Red Pine lake, and then faced unexpected solid snowfields from Red Pine Lake to the upper pine lakes and then on up to the saddle. It was heavenly. And it is now under new snow--a solid base underlying what will hopefully be a good snow year this year.

Fall is great. And then spring is great.
