The Joy of Sudoku

That's not a euphemism.

So... I first saw sudoku about a year ago, just (just) before it got all popular... but I never took the time to actually play it. And then, well, I spend every Conference Sunday with Elder L and his family... and he and I sat down to do my very first sudoku puzzle.

Man, that stuff is addictive.

Sudoku, anyone?

I love it. I got introduced to it by my kids, who do it in their math classes at school. My daughter's a whiz at it.

No doubt! Elder L's boys were looking over my shoulder at the kitchen table... "Lemme help!" I felt like my dad with the VCR.

My anti-sudoku rant.

I don't care for word puzzles... I have enough arcana filling my mind without them. I like sudoku because I LOVE patterns... so, though nowhere near as erudite as the NYT crossword, I think I'll stick to the sudoku.

As for playing it online... I scribble when I do this, and that's not very easy to do with the screen version.

Actually, playing it online is a great way to develop strategies which not only do not require scribbling, but are actually more effective.

My strategy is this:

First I consider only 1's then 2's and so on until I have considered only 9's.

Second, I do this again.

Then I move on to considering individual rows and 9-square blocks.

With this strategy I get in the top 15% on "hard" almost every time.

I prefer the uclick on-line sudoku puzzles. They allow me to make notes in the squares, which I really like.

Here's a link or three.

Good heavens, who knew sudoku would be more popular than my bacon-styled bandages post?!

Great links, everyone... and I especially like the strategy pointers! Thanks!
